At Ease: Sedation Dentistry Can Help You RelaxAugust 22nd, 2016
Let’s imagine for a moment that you recently moved to Geismar, LA, or a nearby community. One of the things you are looking for is a new family dentist, although there is a catch.
Your spouse has dental anxiety. (Thankfully, this trait was not passed along to your children.)
Nevertheless, you want to find an office that will meet your family’s general dentistry needs while also offering dental sedation so your spouse can manage his anxiety.
Whether you are new to our community or you are just looking for a new dentist for another reason, we hope you will stop by to visit Ascension Premier Dental.
Yes, We Have Sedation Dentistry
In fact, we have three levels of dental sedation. Whether you have or your spouse has mild, moderate, or severe dental anxiety, we are confident that we have a way to help.
➤ For mild anxiety
This may be a patient who is comfortable calling the dentist and coming into the office but gets nervous when he or she sits in the dentist chair. If this sounds like someone you know, then we would recommend nitrous oxide for him or her.
Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask that covers your nose. Within minutes of breathing it, you will start to feel euphoric and calmer. This is also why it’s known as laughing gas.
You also will relax, and you will remain calm as long as you continue to breathe in the gas. You may not remember anything about your cleaning, but you can rest assured that you are getting the dental care that you need.
At the end of your treatment, all we have to do is turn off the gas and remove the mask. You will exhale whatever nitrous oxide remains in your system. A few minutes later, you will feel like you did when you walked through the door, and you can go on with the rest of your day.
➤ For moderate anxiety
This patient may be able to make an appointment but has difficulty walking into the dentist office. For you, we have something stronger than nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation.
With oral sedation, you will take a pill before you come to the dentist office. It will be necessary for a family member or friend to bring you to your appointment and to take you home when it is finished.
Oral sedation often leaves patients in a groggy but relaxed state. You may remember some parts of your treatment, or you might not remember anything. Either way, you will be calm and comfortable.
The effects of this medication can last for hours, so you should plan on resting for a time when you get home. Nevertheless, you can feel confident about the condition of your teeth when you wake up.
➤ For severe anxiety
Dental anxiety affects millions of Americans in some way, shape, or form, but for a subsection of those millions, just the thought of going to the dentist can induce a state of anxiousness.
Unfortunately, these also are the patients who are most likely to avoid dental care completely until a dental emergency occurs. We would rather meet you under more pleasant circumstances.
This is why we offer IV sedation. This is the strongest form of sedation we provide. It can only be administered by individuals who have completed required training and have been licensed to do so.
With IV sedation, you will remain in a twilight state throughout your procedure. You won’t remember anything about it, but you will receive all the benefits of quality, professional dental care.
As with oral sedation, the effects can last for hours, so you must arrange for a family member or friend to take you home.
Other Comfort Options
Our hope is that as you get to know how caring our staff is that you also will become more comfortable visiting our office.
Indeed, it may be possible that you start with oral sedation, then ease down to nitrous oxide, and eventually, are able to receive dental care with little or no anxiety.
But even if you always need oral sedation, we will be happy to continue treating you.
In addition to our sedation options, we have a few other ways to help patients stay comfortable.
This starts with our state-of-the-art office with technology designed to make your care as painless as we can make it.
If you want to feel cozy, we will gladly let you borrow a blanket. If you just want something to distract you, we have headphones and televisions.
Many patients find this is enough to make their dental care a little easier.
