Beware The Enemies Of White Teeth [BLOG]

It’s no secret. One of the first things people notice about you is your smile. We all know how important our smiles are in communicating how we feel. An attractive smile not only makes you feel confident, but it allows us to translate that confidence to others as we face the world.

Dr. Bessonet and our highly skilled team at Ascension Premier Dental knows how much you value a healthy, beautiful smile. But we’re also well aware of a common thief in the world of dental problems… one that robs you of the bright, lovely smile you deserve.

That thief is the stain. The enemy of white teeth. The discoloration that takes your mouth from sparkly white to brownish yellow. We’re quite familiar with and share your disdain for this cosmetic killjoy!

That’s why we offer the latest in professional teeth whitening treatment in our Geismar dental office.

The Teeth Staining Band Of Merry Thugs!

Red Wine

Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a glass of red wine with dinner after a long day. In fact, a one glass of red wine a day has even been suggested by researchers as a heart healthy behavior. Who would’ve thought?

The problem with too much of this sweet adult treat is that it can negatively impact your oral health. For one thing, alcohol dehydrates you and causes dry mouth. Without adequate saliva production, you lack the necessary fluid your mouth needs to wash away sugars and food particles left behind after a meal.

As far as the color of your teeth, you have to be careful with a dark beverage like red wine. The dark pigment can stick to your teeth and stain them over time. The acidity in red wine can also weaken your enamel, leaving you vulnerable to erosion, cavities, tooth decay, and other oral problems.

If you enjoy a glass of red wine every night, you might be telling yourself, “Oh, I’m fine. I’ll just brush my teeth after I drink it.” While that seems like a logical way to prevent staining, it might actually have the opposite effect. The reason is because once you’ve sipped, your enamel is weakened, so brushing right afterwards could damage your teeth more. If you brush before you start sipping, you might have a better chance of preventing discoloration. It is, of course, the plaque on your teeth that causes the acids and darker pigments from alcohol stick to your teeth in the first place.

You don’t have to avoid red wine entirely, but remember that moderation is key, and drink plenty of water along with it.

Smoking

There is absolutely nothing good about this habit. It not only stains your teeth, but it can lead to different types of cancer, respiratory problems, premature wrinkles, and the list goes on. Moderation isn’t the answer with this one. The only solution to avoiding the staining effects, and the many other more dangerous effects for that matter, is to quit smoking altogether. Teeth whitening would be a temporary fix to reverse the discoloration caused by smoking. And you’d have to keep repeating the treatment as long as your habit continued.

Dark Fruits & Veggies

Before you get too excited, we should go ahead and tell you we’re not going to advise that you cut fruits and vegetables out of your diet. Sorry to disappoint! Actually, eating foods that are nutrient rich, packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants is one the very best things you can do for your smile.

But there are, believe it or not, some culprits in the health food corner that can stain your teeth. Beets, tomatoes, blueberries, and blackberries, for example, contain acids and dark pigments like we mentioned earlier. They weaken and coat your enamel. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to keep your smile safe from their staining potential. Always remember to drink plenty of water any time you decide to chomp on these healthy snacks!

Coffee

Just like most of the other stainers we mentioned, daily coffee drinking stains your teeth. In fact, coffee is a leader among the acidic, darkly pigmented enemies of your pearly whites. If teeth stains were a club, coffee would be the president.

It’s probably easier for us to tell patients to give up smoking than it is to give up their morning cup of joe. There’s something about our morning coffee that makes it easier to face the day. We wouldn’t be surprised if there were actual studies out there somewhere showing a correlation between coffee drinking and reduced crime rates.

The good news is that you don’t have to give up coffee. You can, however, opt out of sipping on it all throughout the day, and just limit yourself to coffee in the morning, along with a glass of water. You can also help neutralize the effect of the acids by enjoying a healthy snack with your coffee to keep the saliva flowing!
