Sedation Dentistry ExplainedJune 17th, 2016
Welcome back to the ongoing blog of Ascension Premier Dental. Today, we want to focus on sedation dentistry, or dental sedation. Sedation is a wonderful tool we can use to help our patients get the dental work they may desperately need.
Our Geismar, LA dental team understands that some people are not very comfortable visiting the dentist’s office. We can use dental sedation to help patients who may be nervous or even scared feel calm and relaxed.
Below we have answered some of the questions we most commonly hear regarding dental sedation. Feel free to browse our responses and contact us with any additional questions or concerns you may have. We want you to have all the information you need to make smart decisions about your dental care! We will be happy to help!
What is dental sedation?
Dental sedation is the answer to your dental fear and anxiety! Our sedation options (read on to learn more!) come in a variety of forms, but all are designed to help you feel relaxed and at ease while in our care. If you are scared of visiting the dentist, or are even just a little bit nervous, we can help you.
How many levels of dental sedation do you offer at Ascension Premier Dental?
We offer three levels of dental sedation here at Ascension Premier Dental. Each type of sedation can be used in a different situation to help you feel relaxed. We can help you determine which option is right for you. We offer nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. Let’s talk about each one of these options and how they can help you.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation – Nitrous is a gas that is inhaled via a face mask. This low-level form of sedation is used to calm anxious patients and help nervous kids feel relaxed. It can be adjusted easily and wears off quickly. If you need just a little bit of help feeling at ease, this option may be right for you.
Oral Conscious Sedation – Oral conscious sedation is our mid-level option that is used for calming patients with a moderate level of fear or anxiety. This type of sedation comes in the form of a pill or tablet and is ingested before your appointment. It tends to create a sense of grogginess, but it can affect different people in different ways. Please talk to our team to see if oral conscious sedation is a good option for you.
IV Sedation – IV sedation is our heaviest form of sedation and is used for patients who are very fearful or are undergoing a long or complicated treatment. It is commonly used for oral surgery procedures. IV sedation creates a sleep-like state that allows you to wake from the procedure having remembered nothing at all.
Is dental sedation safe to use?
Completely. Our dental team is specially trained to administer and supervise the use of each sedation option we offer. Under our professional supervision, you will be completely safe while under sedation. We will prescribe the dose depending on your needs – we can even adjust the level of nitrous oxide or IV sedation mid-treatment. When you choose dental sedation at Ascension Premier Dental, you are in good hands.
Which sedation option is right for me?
The level of dental sedation that we would recommend depends entirely on your specific situation. We will help you determine which option is right for you based on your level of fear or anxiety as well as the treatment you are undergoing.
We also take into account your medical history and any special needs you may have. To determine which option is best for you, please talk to our team. We will be happy to advise you!
