Two Approaches To A Whiter SmileJuly 15th, 2016
How would you describe a perfect smile?
The teeth would be straight and spaced out evenly.
And those teeth would be dazzlingly white, right?
There’s a reason that teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in dentistry today. Making your teeth whiter and brighter is one of the simplest ways anyone can improve his or her smile.
Many patients who come to Ascension Premier Dental would like to change the appearance of their yellow, stained, and discolored teeth.
Professional teeth whitening is one way to accomplish this, but it’s not the only way. Sometimes it’s not even the best way, which is why we offer veneers as well.

Teeth whitening is incredibly popular. This is why you can find dozens of self-proclaimed “whitening” products when you walk down the toothpaste aisle.
Unfortunately, seeing this on a box may not tell you what the manufacturers means by this claim or how effective it may be.
The American Dental Association has become more interested in whitening products as they have become more common, too. The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs has looked into this issue and concluded that whitening is used in two different ways.
Some whitening products only remove surface stains. This is something that most kinds of toothpaste can do if used correctly.
If you are interested in removing stains from your yellow teeth, you will want something more than that. Other whitening products contain bleaching agents (usually hydrogen peroxide) to remove those deeper stains.
Products with up to 10 percent carbamide peroxide, which is the equivalent of 3.5 percent hydrogen peroxide, may have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. They can remove some stains if used correctly.
Professional whitening products (which you won’t find on store shelves) are significantly stronger. They can contain between 25 and 40 percent hydrogen peroxide. To use round numbers, professional whitening can be 7 to 11 times stronger than commercial products.
For a comparison, consider spraying water at your house to remove years of dirt and debris. You could use a garden hose with a spray attachment, or you could use a pressure washer to remove more of that dirt in a lot less time.
Professional whitening is like that pressure washer for your stained teeth. We are proud to offer KöR, which is one of the top teeth whitening products on the market.
Teeth whitening products are designed to remove stains from your teeth. These can be caused by your love of coffee or teeth, the foods you like to eat, or tobacco use.
But stains aren’t the only reason teeth become discolored. Some people have reactions to medications that cause their teeth to turn color. A traumatic injury can have a similar effect on one or more teeth, and illness is another potential reason your teeth stop looking pearly white.
In those situations, teeth whitening may not be as effective as you would like. Fortunately, veneers can improve the appearance of your teeth in those circumstances.
We offer both porcelain and e.max veneers in our practice. Either can be bonded to the front your teeth to transform the appearance of your smile.
With porcelain veneers, we remove some of the enamel from your teeth to create room for your veneers. When they are ready, we bond the veneers in place and your teeth look instantly whiter.
E.max veneers are thinner than our standard porcelain veneers. As a result, we don’t have to remove as much enamel to prepare your teeth for e.max veneers.
Whichever you choose, you will see much brighter, yet still natural looking teeth.
To return to our house analogy, if having your teeth whitened is like using a pressure washer, then veneers are like getting new siding for your home.
Either one will make your house looking cleaner and nicer. It’s up to you to decide which is the right choice for you.
